Argentine seafood giant acquires scallop harvester

Newsan adds MSC-certified scallops to its seafood lines through its acquisition of compatriot Glaciar Pesquera.

Argentina fisheries, processing and aquaculture giant Newsan has acquired wild- caught scallop harvesting firm Glaciar Pesquera.

Newsan will not only add MSC-certified scallops to its other seafood lines including shrimp, Argentine hake, Patagonian tooth fish, farmed mussels and rainbow trout but also a French base to bolster international distribution links.

As details emerge IntraFish has learned that Antartica Advisors acted as sell side advisor to Glacier parent company Clearwater Seafoods.

The sale value has not been disclosed.

Glaciar was founded in 1995 as a joint venture between Canadian seafood company Clearwater Seafoods and Argentine fishing entrepreneur Eduardo Santiago Gonzalez-Lemmi.

Founded as an electronics manufacturer and distributor, the company diversified its operations into consumer electronics and home appliances, food exports, fast- moving consumer goods and energy.

Canada-based Clearwater was acquired in early 2021 under a joint venture partnership between Premium Brands and a group of Mi’kmaq First Nations.
